£25 received from Dhanlaxmiben M Mehta on the occasion of her 78th birthday.  Congratulations and we pray she enjoys many more birthdays to come.  Thanks from Kendra.

2. Today is Gandhi Jayanti - the birthday of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, one of the most famous freedom fighter for India.  He was also known as Bapu.  Gandhiji was born on 2nd Oct 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat.  He got the apt prefix – ‘Mahatma’ from one of the greatest Indian poets – Rabindranath Tagore.  Mahatma literally translates to a great soul.  After lunch, we will celebrate  Gandhi Jayanti with talk and songs and as usual at Tea Time, Kendra will provide tea and biscuits.

A very good show on Gandhi Bapu was put up by Vinodbhai Kapashi and Jasuben Sheth.
Our members came dressed as Bapuji, Kasturba, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Vallabhbhai Patel and Narendra Modi.  All of them acted excellently – just like the roles of the dignitary they represented. Vinodbhai Kapashi compered the programme very well with historical facts etc.  Several members then sang Bapuji’s favourite Bhajans.  Overall the programme was excellent and everyone enjoyed the same.

3.  Our first film show – Kick - at Cineworld, Staples Corner, after several years took place on 9th Sept, when we sold all the 101 tickets with subsidised rates to members.  After the show 54 members enjoyed delicious hot lunch at the Rams Restaurant.
Our next film show is on Tuesday -7th October and the film will be MARDANI.  Ticket prices for members will be £1 for film only and £5 with lunch at Rams on Kenton Road.  For non-members - £3 for film and £8 with lunch.  Tickets are available at the main desk or from Vinod Parekh.  Show is at 10.30 am.
We are highly grateful to Anilbhai of Skylink Travel who has sponsored the show.
The following films will be shown at Cineworld on Tuesday mornings at 10.30am.  Tkts to be purchased at the Box Office for £3.

4. Next Thursday – 9th Oct we will celebrate ‘Sharad Purnima’ with full day -  11.00 am to 3.30pm live music with Ras Garba and Dandia Raas.  There will be no Yoga.  Please come and enjoy this day and dress for the occasion.  Guest fee for the day will be £10 and names must be informed in advance.
5.  On 16th Oct we will have a talk on Diabetes.

6. On 23rd October we will have a special Diwali lunch and this will be sponsored by the people who went on the Turkey trip, which they enjoyed much. There will be Diwali celebrations after lunch.

7. Last Thursday, we had a very successful full day Health programme of “Blood Pressure & Health Awareness”. There were speakers from different fields. All members were given blood pressure measurement. We had a talk on diet and reducing salt in our diet. We had talk on blood pressure and stroke and heart problems. 240 people participated. Because of the health programme, Manishaben gave a small session of yoga. British Heart Foundation sponsored the lunch and paid for other expenses. Kendra gave a donation of £151.00 to their funds. Raffle tickets were given to all members (with voluntary donation) and three members won blood pressure measuring units.

All the volunteers did a wonderful job. Our Pragnaben Mandalia put in a lot of effort to arrange this program and deserve our thanks for the same.

8.  40 members had joined in the trip to Turkey.  As 2 members cancelled at the last minute due to health reasons, while five cancelled earlier for various reasons.  The weather was good and overall everyone enjoyed the trip. Normally such trips have lunch included which meant going to restaurants and spending lot of time on lunch. This time we did not include lunch in the tour but arranged our own lunch by taking essential items from here. It was a great success and members enjoyed that a lot and all the credit goes to the volunteers who arranged it all. Our Hon Secretary – Jayantbhai Doshi had again to take over as the Manager of the Group after just five days as the allocated Skylink Manager had to return.  Also due to Jayantbhai’s negotiations skills for all arrangements, the trip has yet again made a surplus.  Many thanks to Jayantbhai.
Some members were so impressed by the trip that they donated the following to NVK :
1. £51.00 from Tarlaben & Ramesh Doshi
2. £51.00 from Geeta Parekh
3. £51.00 from Meera Parekh
